How to encourage, support and approve your kids reading so that it becomes their passion? A big key for this, is your attitude as parents in respect of books and reading.
Recently I was at a coffee shop when a mother with her daughter, aged about 10, seated at the table next to mine.
They had a discussion about their order and when to go and position it to the left the mother, her daughter slipped a paperback often out of his bag and began to read.
I was amused to hear the son apologize and then ask permission to read, "only until the food is, Mum." the mother smiled and nodded his consent, and the girl buried head again in the book.
What I found interesting was that on my last visit to the same coffee shop, I had watched a child sitting, with a very bored expression on his face, while his mother reading a magazine and drank her coffee.
It seemed like such a wasted opportunity for this mother and child. He was bored and she was absent and that could have been a fun of such outing.
Now I looked this mother, contentedly observing her baby, it was fully engaged with his book.
The mother appeared to delight in reading and laughing her daughter asked if it was OK for them to speak when the daughter has reached the end of her head.
Two very different attitudes are at stake here-a father read delights, the other is used to alleviate boredom for herself.
What attitude you want to pass to your children? When I was a girl, my mother drove us to the library every second Friday. we got a cardboard cardboard each to bring home worth our fifteen books. still remember the feeling of seek and find more books to take home and emotion to overthrow all the books out on the floor and choosing one that before you start.
Books were always the best gifts, and to receive a book good came a close second.
Be able to choose my books is still one of my greatest joys!
Attitude of my mother to reading was that it was a very special and thus takes precedence over many other things.
For example, if you called me to contribute with something, or if it was time to put the light out, always told me to finish the first chapter.
Books were dear friends and the weather was always liberamente as if we were reading books had as gifts, any series that we were reading was always updated and was encouraged to read in many different forms.
We were given, comic books, journals and yearbooks to over-indulge and books have been borrowed, loan and stored. we were taught to take care of them both physically and emotionally, and conversations on the characters and their adventures were always encouraged.
My grandparents continuously praised me for being such an avid reader and I rewarded with more good books to read.
Your attitude to books and reading to children is observed and imitated.
If you:
books to find comforting and enjoyableread booksdiscuss bookspurchase bookssuggest titlesmake reading time availablehave shelves full of newspapers booksread and magazinesask for tranquillity while reading
then you are giving a strong message to your children that books are precious and reading is fun.
The love reading is formed and encouraged by parents.
It takes time to learn to read fluently and easily and the time to keep up reading. This precious time must be given freely.
Encourage your children to find a particular series or an author to explore.
Try to have a book event room each child and encourage each child's individual style and taste for reading to evolve.
The biggest NO! children's reading is a television in the bedroom of the child
Research suggests that children can go to their room to watch television are often more socially lazy than those who watch in your living room.
Of course some watch television is both fun and educational, but the reading before sleeping, rather than TV should always be encouraged.
A BBC news item earlier in the year promoted children reading.
Reading, it said, was not only a pleasure, but a route out of poverty.
Additionally, the benefits of reading is probably one of the best anti-poverty, anti-deprivation, anti-crime, equipped with policies you can think of.
Launch of national campaign to get more adults and children more reading and enjoying books one reason parents to spend more time with their children to read.
